What to expect in your first session

What to expect in your first session

If you are new to therapy, it is common to feel uncertain or nervous about what to expect. The first session is designed to help you and your psychologist get to know each other and understand what has brought you to therapy.

The session is usually a conversation where we will ask about your current concerns, relevant background history, and what you are hoping to achieve from support. You are not required to share anything you are not comfortable discussing.

We will also discuss your goals for therapy and what you would like to be different or improved over time. These do not need to be clearly defined at the start.

The first session also provides an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether the therapeutic approach and setting feel appropriate for you.

By the end of the session, we will usually have an initial understanding of your needs and a general direction for future sessions. This may include recommendations for ongoing therapy or further assessment where appropriate.

Appointments are available in Petersham, Newtown, and the Sydney CBD, as well as via telehealth across Australia.
