It’s Just a Joint

When Cannabis Becomes a Problem

Cannabis is often viewed as relatively harmless, and for many people it does not lead to significant difficulties. However, for some individuals particularly adolescents and young adults regular cannabis use can begin to affect mental health, relationships and daily functioning.

Rather than asking, “Does this person use cannabis?”, a better question is, “What impact is cannabis having on their life?”

Warning signs may include:

  • Using cannabis to cope with stress, anxiety or low mood.
  • Needing increasing amounts to achieve the same effect.
  • Declining motivation, concentration or memory.
  • Problems at school, work or in relationships.
  • Difficulty cutting back despite wanting to.
  • Feeling irritable, anxious or unable to sleep when not using.

For some people, heavy cannabis use can worsen anxiety and depression, while in others it may contribute to paranoia or even trigger psychotic symptoms, particularly if there is a personal or family vulnerability.

If cannabis is becoming the main way someone manages life’s challenges, it is worth exploring what lies beneath the behaviour rather than focusing solely on stopping the drug. Understanding the reasons for use and developing healthier coping strategies often leads to more lasting change.

At Resilience Matters Clinical Psychology, we work with adolescents and adults to understand the role cannabis is playing in their lives and help them build practical, sustainable strategies for better mental health.
