How do I know if I need to see a psychologist? 8 signs it's time

You don't have to wait for a crisis

One of the most common questions people ask themselves is, 'Is what I'm going through bad enough to see someone?' The honest answer: you don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. If something is weighing on you, that's reason enough.

Psychologists often think about two simple questions: how much distress are you feeling, and how much is it getting in the way of the life you want to live? When either is high, support can help.

Signs it might be time to reach out

  1. Persistent low mood, worry or hopelessness that doesn't seem to lift
  2. Anxiety or worry that feels constant or hard to control
  3. Trouble sleeping, eating or concentrating
  4. Avoiding people, places or activities you used to manage
  5. Relying on alcohol, food or other habits to cope
  6. Feeling irritable, overwhelmed or emotionally numb
  7. Strain in your relationships, or withdrawing from people
  8. Carrying a difficult experience you've never really processed

You don't need to tick several of these. Even one that's been hanging around is worth talking about.

'But other people have it worse'

Many people delay reaching out because they feel their struggles aren't serious enough, or that they should be able to manage on their own. But mental health isn't a competition, and seeking support early often means fewer sessions and a gentler path. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

What happens next

Taking the first step is usually the hardest part. From there it's straightforward: you can see your GP about a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, or simply get in touch with a practice directly to ask about booking.

If you've read this far, that quiet sense that something needs attention is worth listening to. Reaching out for a conversation costs nothing, and could be the start of feeling more like yourself again.
